Android APK installation
Android calls direct installation “sideloading.” On Android 8.0 and newer, permission applies only to the browser or Files app used to open the APK. Android 7 uses the older device-wide Unknown sources switch. Neither method requires developer settings.
Download the APK on the Android phone or tablet where you want to use Canvas Relay.
Open the completed download from your browser or the Files app.
If Android blocks the install, Android 8.0 and newer will open a Settings prompt where you enable Allow from this source for that browser or Files app. On Android 7, use Settings → Security → Unknown sources. Return to the installer and choose Install.
Open Canvas Relay and sign in with your existing Canvas Relay account. Create an account on the website first if you do not have one.
For tighter security, return to that app's Install unknown apps setting and turn off Allow from this source after installation.
Verify the file
Download Pilot only from canvasrelay.app. The current APK identifies itself as Canvas Relay, version 0.1.1, package app.canvasrelay.companion.

Android may warn that APK files can be harmful because this build is installed outside Google Play. Confirm the official Canvas Relay address and file details before proceeding. If Play Protect blocks the app, stop and contact support; do not disable Play Protect or other device security.
Updating Pilot
Return to this page when a newer Pilot version is announced, download the new APK, and install it over the existing app. Android verifies that updates use the same signing identity. You normally do not need to uninstall first.
