Connect a Raspberry Pi
Download and flash the tested Raspberry Pi 5 image, boot on Ethernet, sign in, and choose a published screen on the appliance.
The Raspberry Pi is the reference player: cheap, silent, and our image makes it behave like an appliance — it boots straight into the player, restarts itself if anything crashes, and keeps playing through network outages.
Flash the image
- Download the standard canvas-relay-raspberry-pi.zip or raw canvas-relay-raspberry-pi.img from /players/raspberry-pi and verify its published SHA-256 checksum.
- Raspberry Pi Imager can open the ZIP directly; Rufus and other raw-image tools use the .img file. Select an 8 GB or larger microSD card or supported USB drive and write it.
- Insert the storage in a Raspberry Pi 5, connect HDMI and Ethernet, then apply power.
- Sign in on the Pi with an existing Canvas Relay email and password, then choose a published screen. Press Esc during playback to return to the chooser.
The image runs Chromium in kiosk mode with supervised services and a persistent profile. The account session, unique device credential, selected screen, and cached release survive normal reboots and slot changes.
Wi-Fi and networking
Use Ethernet for first boot and normal deployment. This immutable A/B image does not claim Raspberry Pi Imager cloud-init customization support, so do not assume Imager Wi-Fi settings will persist. The player needs outbound HTTPS only — no inbound ports or VPN.
