Install and pair the Google TV receiver
Google TV / Android TV has a signed direct-download receiver beta that is sideloaded on the TV and paired with a six-digit code.
What you may be seeing
- You want to install the Canvas Relay receiver on a Google TV / Android TV device.
- You expected a Google Play listing but need the current direct-download beta path.
What usually causes it
- The signed TV receiver is distributed directly from canvasrelay.app and is not yet listed in Google Play.
- Android requires temporary Install unknown apps permission for the browser, transfer app, or file manager opening a direct APK.
Do this
- Download the Google TV APK from /players/android-tv and transfer it to the TV by USB, a trusted file-transfer app, or a capable TV downloader.
- Open Settings → Apps → Security & Restrictions or Special app access → Install unknown apps and allow only the app opening the APK.
- Install Canvas Relay, turn that permission off again, then open the receiver and note its six-digit code.
- In Screens → Add screen choose Android TV / Google TV, enter the code, name the screen, and assign a published board.
- Developer mode is not required unless you deliberately use ADB; disable debugging again after an ADB installation.
You know it is fixed when
- Screens reports the Android/Google TV endpoint online with the intended board and an active deployment.
- The TV reopens the saved screen after an app restart and receives a later published board release.
Worth knowing
- Package app.canvasrelay.tv is the receiver. The app.canvasrelay.companion phone/tablet APK is a separate management app.
